Depression is a common illness that can affect anyone. This condition is found twice as often in women as in men. Depression is a medical problem that can be treated.
Depression is more than just feeling sad for a short time or feeling grief after a loss. These feelings are very hard to deal with but they get better over time. Depression can disrupt your daily life. It can affect your thoughts, feelings, behavior and physical health. Depression often does not get better without help.
Depression has many different causes. Often depression is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. Other illness may trigger depression as well. Thyroid disease, cancer or neurological problems are some examples of this. The use of drugs and alcohol can trigger depression.
In some cases, depression can occur even if everything is going well in a person’s life. Extreme stress or grief may bring on depression. Stresses may include:
- Raising children and working outside the home
- Balancing tasks at home and work
- Stressful work place
- Single parenting
- Financial problems
SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION
- Lack of interest in things you used to enjoy
- Feeling of sadness
- Restlessness
- Change in appetite
- Suicidal thoughts
- Problems concentrating
- Sleeping too much or insomnia
- Lack of energy, fatigue
A physician may diagnose depression. Treatment may include antidepressants, psychotherapy or both.
Coping with depression
Do not demand too much of yourself. Set a routine that is realistic. Follow your doctor’s advice and keep appointments.
