Physicians recommend mammograms because they are effective in detecting breast cancer early. The National Cancer Institute suggests a three- point breast cancer detection plan to follow.

  • AGE 30: A Baseline Mammogram should be obtained if a first degree relative has a history for breast cancer
  • AGE 35: A Baseline Mammogram should be obtained
  • AGE 40-49: Mammograms are recommended every 2 years
  • AGE 50+: Mammograms are recommended every year
  • If you have a strong family history of breast cancer, ask how often you should have mammograms
  • Best to have a bilateral breast ultrasound if patient is showing a density on their mammogram or if patient's breasts are very fibrocystic

STEP ONE: Mammography
An x-ray of the breast is taken. It can detect tumors too small to be felt and show other changes in the breasts.

STEP TWO: Physical Exam
A breast exam by a health care provider.

STEP THREE: Breast Self Exam
The best time to do breast self-exams are a day or two after your period ends. This is when your breasts are the least likely to be tender or swollen.
