A breast self-exam should be done by all women to detect for any changes that may occur in the breast. The best time to do breast self-exams is right after your period has ended. If you no longer have periods then pick a particular day of the month, i.e., the first day of every month. This is one of the most important preventative measures you can do for yourself. It is important that you get familiar with how your breasts normally feel. Then if a lump appears you will know it is something new and can have it checked by your gynecologist. If you have fibrocystic breasts, it is important than you decrease caffeine intake and take Vitamin E supplements. Any changes or lumps should be discussed with your physician.

When performing breasts self exams you need to first visually look at your breasts in the mirror. Determine if there are any nipple changes or inverted areas in the breast tissue. Look for any nipple discharge.

Lie flat on your back and begin at the top of your breast and move your fingers slowly around the outside in a large circular motion. When you return to the top of your breast, move your hand a little closer to the nipple area and make a smaller circle. Repeat this until you have examined all of your breast tissue. Make sure you check under both arms because 50% of all lumps are found in the upper outer quadrant of your breasts and under your arms.

Most women do not mind doing self-breast exams; they just can’t remember to do them. It would be a good idea to place a small object to act as a reminder close to your toothbrush or other personal item you use daily. That constant reminder will be a remembrance for you to check your breasts.

After age 85, breast cancer risk increases to 1 in 8. By starting the habit of monthly breast self-exams early, will only decrease your chances of breast cancer by a careful examination of your breasts on a monthly basis.
