Domestic Violence
Abuse is forceful, controlling behavior that makes a woman do what the abuser wants without regards to her feelings about her body or health.
A woman is considered abused if she has repeated physical or emotional harm done to her by a person she has an intimate relationship with.
TYPES OF ABUSE
- Battering and physical assault
- Sexual assault
- Emotional or psychological abuse
GETTING HELP: SAFETY PLANNING
If you are still in the relationship:
- Think of a safe place to go if an argument develops
- Make a list of safe people to contact
- Keep change with you at all times
- Memorize important phone numbers
- Establish a “code word or sign” so family members know when to call for help
- Keep a prepacked suitcase for self and children
- Keep spare set of car keys or an alternative form of transportation
If you have left the relationship:
- Change your phone number
- Screen calls/ caller ID
- Save and document all calls and messages
- Change locks
- Only meet partner in a public place if you must meet him
- Vary your routine
- Notify school and work contacts
- Try to avoid staying alone
